ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOX) – Some disappointing news for thousands of youth soccer players in the area.
The Midwest Cup tournament scheduled for this weekend at the Saint Louis Youth Soccer Association complex in Saint Charles has been canceled.
Lou Fusz Soccer Club director Steve Krause says given the rainy forecast, the Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Saint Charles didn’t want organizers to take any chances with possible flooding.
250 teams of girls and boys ages eight to 18 were registered for the tournament.
Still, Krause says sandbagging at the levee near Slysa wasn’t for naught.
“A bunch of work’s been done by not only the National Guard overnight, but the thousands of volunteers who have came out the last seven days so we’re all confident the levee’s in good shape and our fields will be saved for use in coming weeks and through the rest of the spring,” he said.
The flood of 2008 caused major damage to the soccer complex.
Due to the tight schedule, Krause said the tournament unfortunately cannot be rescheduled.
“The tournament calendar is full, there’s one every weekend. So this is pretty much the Lou Fusz weekend so once you lose it, you lose it for a year,” he said.
