CLARKSVILLE, MO (KMOX) - The Mississipi River town of Clarksville still has its sandbags up from the April flood and now they may have to add more because of what’s coming.
“When the prediction came to us in April, we built a wall with excess room at the top beyond what they suggested where the level might be,” Clarksville Mayor Jo Ann Smiley says. “I think we had eight inches to go at that point and we have built a wall that, if the river continues to rise, we can add to.”
Smiley says they have extra sandbags on hand and volunteers from Americorps to stack them.
“We are here, we know it’s coming, we are as prepared as we can possible be,” she said. “We’ll have a group here this afternoon to manage the pumps overnight and we will await Sunday and see what happens.”
The official crest prediction for Clarksville is 34.4 ft. on Sunday, a foot below the April crest, but that could change depending on how much rain falls upriver.
