DES PLAINES, IL (IRN) - Rivers are receding in Northern Illinois, but some roads are still closed due to flooding.
Roads closed due to flooding in Des Plaines won’t open until at least Tuesday, according to the city manager. Orchard Road, an important thoroughfare in Aurora, re-opened on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Gov. Pat Quinn declared more Illinois counties as disaster areas, bringing the total number to 44. Those designations permit expanded access to emergency resources. The governor visited Marseilles on Sunday, where 200 people have been evacuated along with 60 nursing home residents. An elementary school has also been closed. The governor’s Sunday stops also included Ottawa and North Utica.
The Mississippi River crested Sunday in the Quad Cities, but the water level is expected to remain high for days. In Rock Island County, a Rock River levee breached near Barstow on Saturday. Sixty residents of a mobile home park were evacuated. An earthen dam was installed to protect the town.
