Floods Threaten Upper Mississippi Riverbanks

LOUISIANA, Mo. (KMOX) – With the Mississippi flooding to the north of St. Louis, the call continues to go out for volunteers to help with sandbag work in Louisiana, Missouri. That’s a town without a permanent levee.

In St. Charles County, the Elm Point Levee is threatened with the Army Corps of Engineers working with the levee district there to cover a low spot in a flank levee.

On the Illinois side, Highway 96 is underwater at Mozier in Calhoun County. Detours are posted.

The levee has been breached at Chouteau Island in Madison County. That’s an island that frequently floods.

Highway officials say other lowland roads could be underwater north of St. Louis in the next 48 hours as the Mississippi continues to climb.

The problem is not as serious from St. Louis south. The Missouri River is not in flood and that should keep river levels from St. Louis south in check.

There’s more good news from the weather service with no more than an inch of additional rain forecast through midweek.
